A study using Steam's Early Access as of November 2014 found that only 25% of the titles submitted as early access had made it to a final release form. While those that buy into the early access do get an incomplete game to play, test out, and provide input to the developers, these people also run the risk that the game will never be completed or may be a sub-par product. The early access approach has been criticized by some as noted by Ben Kurchera of Polygon stated that the early access model validates the use of unfinished games as a "valid business strategy".

Here is the direct info: Gamasutra considered the concept of early access, particularly Steam's approach, as one of the five trends in 2013 that defined the direction that the video game industry was headed. I'd love for someone to prove me wrong without a barrage of downvotes, but it just seems like this is still even pre-alpha.

One of the pros of console gaming is that there are never going to be issues with actually playing it since they're designed specifically for that console and the hardware that comes with it. It's not like I went against the guidelines and bought the game to play it on something that couldn't run it. But isn't the early access so the community can test it out in a rudimentary, but stable environment? This shoddy FPS makes it very difficult to play for more than like 10 minutes at a time without being infuriated, and will in turn make the community's ability to give feedback on content and bugs suffer as well. By proxy, this makes the controls suffer since you're often a little bit off of where you actually are since the game stops playing so often.Īm I in the wrong here? I've brought this up a few times but every time I've been shouted down by people saying that it's "early access". Every time you look at something new, or when you go inside the escape pod, or basically any time you aren't pressed up against a wall the frames drop down to an unacceptable level for something somebody charged money for. The sheer amount of content for an alpha seems incredible but it's all rendered naught by the fact that you literally can't play it. Now, when I bought this, I did not expect the game to be complete, but I at least expected it to be in a playable state. Unfortunately, my PC is lacking and I know I can't play this game, so I just kind of forgot about it until a few days ago I discovered a port had been released on Xbox. Aside from it looking pretty as hell, the gameplay seems very fluid (if you'll pardon the pun) and has potential to become an incredible experience. I've seen people play this game, and frankly, it looks incredible. I'm not sure when basic playability stopped being a must for video game alphas.
